Advanced Digital Communications

Course Description:

This class is aimed at senior undergraduate students and first year Master’s students with the goal introducing design of transmitters and receivers in both wireline and wireless communication systems. The theme throughout the class was advanced signal processing applications in communications. Topics of the class included background on signal space approach and discrete detection; transmission over linear time-invariant channels: optimal sequence detection, linear and decision feedback equalization (DFE), precoding, OFDM and channel estimation; wireless communication: channel characteristics, coherent/non-coherent detection, temporal, frequency and spatial diversity, multiuser detection; connections to information theory: waterfilling algorithms for OFDM, spectral shaping for DFE.

This course was taught at EPFL in Fall 2003, Fall 2004 and Fall 2005.
